The Knights and Ladies of Saint Jean de Brébeuf (KLSJB) is a traditional Catholic scouting program faithful: to the Catholic Church and its Traditions and  to the Catholic scouting education system passed on to us from Venerable Fr. Jacques Sevin, SJ based on Lord Baden Powell’s methodology.

The movement aims to provide opportunities for boys and girls to develop in five areas: health, practical sense, character development, sense of service and above all, the KLSJB meets the need for spirituality in our society.  We make ours the motto of Fr. Sevin “a better scout because a catholic, and a better catholic because a scout”.

CATHOLIC SCOUTING

WHAT IS CATHOLIC SCOUTING?

The Scouting method employed by the Knights and Ladies of St. Jean de Brebeuf (KLSJB) was developed by the Europa-Scouts. It is based on one originated from Sir Robert Baden-Powell and baptized by Ven. Father Jacques Sevin, SJ within the Scouts of France. It aims to develop children and adolescents through play and adventure in nature and taking responsibility within their groups. Organized activities are designed to help these young people grow in five areas traditionally called “the five goals of Scouting”.

Health: The relationship to his body. The child must develop, prepare and protect his body for the lifestyle of an outdoors man. He learns some rules for safety, hygiene and first aid.

Character Formation: Relationship itself. Children learn to respect others and develop responsibility through self discipline. He will realize his capacities, limits and the consequences of his actions.

Handcraft and Skill: The relationship to the world. The child must be capable of transforming the natural elements into something useful, using his creativity and ingenuity.

Sense of service: The relationship with others. The child learns to serve with a smile without expecting anything in return. He takes time to do his good turn (GT), a small spontaneous and original service, that requires little effort every day.

The Sense of God: The relationship with God. The child develops the love of God through the regular reception of the Sacraments, praying with the patrol, or alone.

According to the principles of Scouting, the Explorers program is based on the principle of mutual learning and volunteering: there is no paid staff and educators in the troops and patrols who must learn to work independently. In each group, the most experienced and should help educate the younger.

TIMBERWOLF

The Timber Wolf is the youngest branch of Scouting. A “tender pad” (young cub) can enter the pack from 8 years old and stays there until 11 or 12 years old when he goes to the troop. This structure was created by Vera Barclay following a request from young children wanting to prepare for Scouting.
To succeed with them, any method of education must take into account above all that which is essential to childhood. This was done “by simply placing oneself in the point of view of children” (Vera Barclay), and from there, by instituting appropriate structures, methods, and activities.

EXPLORER/GUIDE

Entering the troop (company) from the age of 11-12 years, the newcomer joins a PATROL. He is then only an “aspirant”. He aspires to commit to scouting by passing his requirements for the promise. The explorer (the guide) commits to be ALWAYS READY to serve God, the Church, the homeland and the family. From now on, he is a scout.
A scout who does not progress is not a good scout. This is why a progression structure through technical or religious test helps the Scout to grow. He works on his 2nd class, his badges and then the 1 st class. A scout of 1 st class is accomplished and ready to join the ROAD.
Other elements allow the Scout to progress, such as like the PRINCIPLES, and the EXPLORER LAW that enables him to flourish better in the VIRTUES.
The scout follows regular activities all year so as not to lose focus and direction and to live the scout spirit.

Scouting puts at the disposal of each of the concrete means to progress. An explorer or guide who voluntarily has no desire to grow, cannot continue within the unit. Whether one is behind, APC or PC, we are called to go beyond, to learn more and to grow, in order to put all these qualities in the service of others. Thus, the life of a scout is punctuated by several stages …
